About Nostril Reduction
What is Nostril Reduction?
Surgical procedures on the shape of the nostrils can be performed as part of aesthetic nose operations, and in a very small proportion of cases patients may also be operated on solely to reduce the nostrils.
In patients in whom the size of the nostrils needs to be changed or who request this, the most important issue to be emphasised in the preoperative consultation is that after these operations there will be incisions visible from the outside to a greater or lesser degree. To reduce the nostrils and/or narrow the width of the nose, skin incisions are needed located between the nose and the lips, and sometimes extending along the sides of the nose between the nose and the cheeks. Although they are not very noticeable scars since they lie in a fold region of the face, if one considers that in normal nose operations all incisions are made in places inside the nose that are not seen or remain on the underside of the nose, these incisions are relatively long and made in visible places.
These surgical techniques, which are usually not necessary in our society, are needed more in populations of African origin in which the feature of a flat and wide nose is more common. In our population, they are needed more for correcting nasal deformities that develop when babies born with cleft lip and palate deformity reach adulthood, or in the group of patients who have lost nasal projection after trauma. However, although rarely, there may also be patients who request a reduction of the nasal width or of the nostrils.
