The eyes are perhaps the most important aesthetic feature of the human face. Not only their shape or colour but also the expression in the gaze determines the beauty of the eyes. However, the area around the eyes is the region of our face where signs of aging appear first. In the thirties, skin accumulation begins in the upper eyelids and bags in the lower eyelids. These cause a person to look constantly tired, sleepless, sad or older than their real age. With aesthetic procedures directed at the area around the eyes, it may be possible to obtain a calmer, younger appearance. It may be possible to give people a fresh appearance by changing their facial expression.
Although the term eyelid aesthetics is more widely used in society in general, the term periorbital (eye-area) aesthetics describes the procedures performed more accurately. Here it is necessary to evaluate the upper eyelid together with the eyebrows and forehead, and the lower eyelid together with the cheek. In the upper eyelid, excess skin is removed and the accumulation forming over the eyelid is prevented. In addition, the tails of the eyebrows are lifted. If necessary, the eyebrows are raised with the help of an endoscope. In the lower eyelid, the disturbed eyelid-cheek relationship is corrected. The bulging fat in the lower eyelid is removed and moved over the cheek, and at the same time the midface region is moved upwards. If necessary, fat injections are given to the cheek and around the eyes. Chemical peeling or laser can be performed for fine wrinkles around the eyes. Filler can be applied to crow's feet at the corners of the eyes. For colour changes around the eyes, laser applications or fat injections can again be performed. All these procedures can be performed individually, or they can also be carried out as part of a facial rejuvenation operation.
Today, with the increase in demand for non-surgical methods, some alternative methods have also been developed for eye-area aesthetics. Laser applications can be performed especially to reduce colour changes and bags in the eyelids. In patients presenting with colour change in the eyelid and volume loss, a white-coloured filler known as a light filler can be applied under the skin, both making up the volume deficit and making the skin colour appear lighter.
As in all aesthetic procedures, aesthetic success in eye-area aesthetics will be achieved by the patient being evaluated by an experienced aesthetic surgeon and by the most suitable technique, or appropriate combinations of techniques, being offered according to the person's needs, instead of trying to impose and apply a single technique. In addition, eye-area aesthetics should be addressed within the framework of overall facial aesthetics, and not disturbing, or maintaining, the harmony of the face should be the basis.
