An important point to consider when examining our patients who present for breast surgery is whether or not there is breast asymmetry. In fact, one hundred per cent symmetry is found in almost no region of our body. This also applies to the breasts. However, where the asymmetry is very slight, the person presenting is not aware of this asymmetry. In some of our patients, the cause of the asymmetry between the breasts is not that the breasts are asymmetrical, but the asymmetrical structure of the patient's rib cage.
It is important that this difference is revealed with the measurements made during the examination and the digital three-dimensional analyses that are now possible, and that it is taken into account when planning. In all patients in whom the presence of asymmetry has been detected beforehand, an attempt is made to correct the existing asymmetry with any kind of breast operation performed (whether breast reduction, breast augmentation or breast lift). However, it should also be explained to our clients that, however much effort is made, millimetric symmetry should not be expected. The expectation that breasts, which are not exactly identical even in nature, will be one hundred per cent identical to each other after the operation may disappoint patients after the operation. In breast operations the goal is not to end up with exactly identical breasts, but to obtain a natural breast appearance that looks symmetrical and beautiful.
Even if beautiful results are obtained after aesthetic breast surgery, we can prevent our patients from requesting surgery again and again purely because of a symmetry obsession only by informing our clients correctly and fully in the preoperative consultations.
