About Breast Asymmetry
What is Correction of Breast Asymmetry?
Almost none of the organs in our body is symmetrical. It should be known that paired organs such as our hands and eyes, apart from being mirror images of each other, are in fact not completely symmetrical. However, when it comes to breast symmetry in women, symmetry probably gains greater importance because the breasts are anatomically very close to each other and comparison is more possible.
When carrying out the first examination of patients presenting for breast aesthetics, it is important that the symmetry assessment is done correctly. While a difference of a few centimetres does not catch the eye in a very large breast, the same difference may be more noticeable after breast reduction. The opposite situation may also occur. A small asymmetry overlooked in a patient who comes for breast augmentation may become more conspicuous when the breasts are enlarged with silicone implants and may bother the patient. In addition, even though the breasts are symmetrical, the breasts may appear asymmetrical because of asymmetries of the patient's chest wall. Noticing all these details at the first examination and discussing them openly with the patient, and trying to eliminate these asymmetries as far as possible during the operation, are matters that increase patient satisfaction after aesthetic breast operations.
In patients whose breasts did not develop equally and who have severe breast asymmetry, what the patient wants and what solutions the doctor can offer become important. If both breasts are very large and a reduction is to be performed, symmetry can be achieved by removing less from one and more from the other. In some patients, while a reduction is performed on one breast, it may be necessary to equalise volume by placing a small implant in the other breast. Sometimes, in a one-sided deformity of the chest wall, rather than placing only a breast implant, a chest wall implant may be needed with more comprehensive planning. In some patients, using the person's own fat as a filler may be an option for eliminating the asymmetry.
In conclusion, breast asymmetries clinically cover a wide spectrum of patients. The success of the treatment of breast asymmetries is the result of a correct diagnosis, which can be achieved through a good preoperative examination, and of good planning, which can be achieved through a high level of patient-doctor communication.
