About Thumb Reconstruction

What is Thumb Reconstruction?

In patients with an absent thumb, giving the hand a grasping function by transferring the second finger to the place of the thumb can be used as an alternative to toe-to-hand transfer. In addition, in some patients the thumb may congenitally be located as a fifth finger in line with the other four fingers. In this case, since giving the correct function to the existing finger is more appropriate surgery than adding an extra finger to the hand, pollicization becomes the surgical method of first choice in this group of patients.

Although it technically requires microsurgery, it is a surgical technique that is easier than toe-to-hand transfer and whose postoperative recovery process carries less risk.
